The Cinema of Nuri Bilge Ceylan |
The Global Vision of a Turkish Filmmaker:
Film maker Nuri Bilge Ceylan's meditative, visually stunning contributions to the "New Turkish Cinema" have marked him out as a pioneer of his medium. Reaping success from his prize-winning, breakout film Uzak (2002), and from later festival favourites Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011) and Winter Sleep (2014), he has quickly established himself as an original and provocative writer, director, and producer of 21st century cinema.
In an age where Turkey's modernization has created societal tensions and departures from past tradition, Ceylan's films present a cinema of dislocation and a vision of "nostalgia" understood as homesickness: sick of being away from home; sick of being at home. This book offers an overdue study of Ceylan's work and a critical examination of the principle themes therein. In particular, chapters focus on time and space, melancholy and loneliness, absence, rural and urban experience, and notions of paradox, as explored through films which are often slow and uncompromising in their pessimistic outlook. Six Turkish Filmmakers |
Examining the vanguard of New Turkish Cinema, Laurence Raw shows how these films reveal the effects of profound socioeconomic change on ordinary people in contemporary Turkey.
In analysis of and personal interviews with Dervis Zaim, Zeki Demirkubuz, Semih Kaplanoglu, Çagan Irmak, Tolga Örnek, and Palme d'Or winner Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Raw draws connections with Turkish theater, art, sculpture, literature, poetry, philosophy, and international cinema. A native of England and a twenty-five-year resident of Turkey, Raw interleaves his film discussion with thoughtful commentary on nationalism, gender, personal identity, and cultural pluralism.

New Cinema in Turkey |
Filmmakers and Identities between Urban and Rural Space:
The book presents a critical assessment of the last twenty years of the "New Turkish Auteur Cinema" by comparing the so-called "third generation", the directors born in the early '60s, to a fourth generation of directors, born in the '70s and '80s, who, in the great majority, made their debut in the last decade. As such, this study represents the most up-to-date English language book on Turkish cinema.

The Long Take: Critical Approaches |
Filmmakers and Identities between Urban and Rural Space:
This is the first book in English exclusively devoted to the long take, one of the key elements of film style. Increasingly visible in contemporary international media, the long take currently attracts a good deal of attention in criticism and commentary. There are also significant strands of film theory in which duration has become a recurrent concern.
The Long Take: Critical Approaches brings together essays by established and emerging scholars in an exciting collection that analyses works from a range of filmmaking traditions, from the 1930s to the present day, selected to represent varied long take practices and to explore associated debates.

Poetics of Slow Cinema: Nostalgia, Absurdism, Boredom |
This book discusses slow cinema, a contemporary global production trend that has recently gained momentum in film theory and criticism. Slow films dispense with narrative progression in favour of a contemplative mood, which is stretched out to the extreme in order to impel viewers to confront cinematic temporality in all its undivided glory. Despite its critical reputation as an oblique mode of film practice, slow cinema continues to attract, challenge and provoke audiences. Focusing on filmmakers Béla Tarr, Tsai Ming-liang and Nuri Bilge Ceylan, this book identifies nostalgia, absurd humour and boredom as intrinsic dimensions of slow cinema and explores the ways in which these directors negotiate local filmmaking conventions with the demands of a global cinephile niche. As the first study to treat slow cinema both as an aesthetic style and as an institutional discourse, Poetics of Slow Cinema offers an illuminating perspective on the tradition's historical genealogy and envisions it with a Janus-faced disposition in the age of digital technologies?lamenting at once the passing of difficult, ambiguous modernist film and capitalizing on the yearning for its absence.

Female Silences, Turkey's Crises |
Gender, Nation and Past in the New Cinema of Turkey:
In the mid-1990s Turkish cinema experienced a remarkable revival. However, what is particularly unusual about this revival is the emergence of a new representational form: silent, inaudible characters. Equally unusual is the fact that this new on-screen silence had a gender(ed/ing) aspect, since, for the most part, the mute(d) characters were female. This book focuses on these newly emergent silent female characters in the new cinema of Turkey, and explores the relationship between the 'new' female representational form, the 'new' cinema of Turkey, and the 'new' socio-political climate in Turkey after the September 12, 1980 military coup. It investigates two central questions: what are the functions, formations and operations of these silent female characters, and why did this female representational form emerge specifically in this timeframe? Bearing a cinematic function of instrumentality and exposing, one way or another, a close association between point of view and discursive authority in the films studied, the silent female representational form in the new cinema of Turkey is a cinematic symptom of the on-going struggle over the disrupted orders of gender, nation and national memory due to an increase in thus-far silenced or marginalized voices in Turkey.

Immaturity in each source of Contemporary Individualism |

Nuri Bilge Ceylan : Essays and Interviews |
The Turkish writer-director Nuri Bilge Ceylan had his short film Cocoon selected for the 1995 Cannes Festival competition, the first Turkish short ever to achieve this distinction. Ceylan has been acclaimed at Cannes ever since: Distant won the Grand Prix in 2003, Climates the FIPRESCI prize, and Three Monkeys the Best Director award. In 2011 he won the Grand Prix again, for Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, and Ceylan's 2014 film Winter Sleep won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Ceylan's low-budget, art-house cinema thrives on a tension between dedication to formal control and commitment to realistic authenticity. His films are drenched in a brooding, meditative atmosphere and anchored to a deeply intimate form of visual and aural poetry that undercuts the importance of narrative per se. In its own quiet, understated manner, Ceylan's cinema confronts the big thematic questions of all great art: what are we doing with our lives and why; how does the past influence both the present and future; how may we reconcile our desires and ideals with the disappointments of reality; how can our human relationships survive intact when people are forever being encouraged to search for something better than what they already have? Nuri Bilge Ceylan: Essays and Interviews is the first book wholly in English dedicated to this important artist's oeuvre. Included are eight interviews with Ceylan and ten essays about his films, together with a biographical introduction, full movie credits, and a bibliography. Robert Cardullo has published a number of books, among them André Bazin on French Cinema, World Directors in Dialogue, and Playing to the Camera. After taking his doctoral degree from Yale, Cardullo taught for four decades both inside and outside the United States. (Back cover)

Slow Movies : Countering the Cinema of Action |
"In all film there is the desire to capture the motion of life, to refuse immobility" Agnes Varda has noted. But to capture the reality of human experience, cinema must fasten on stillness and inaction as much as motion. Slow Movies investigates movies by acclaimed international directors who in the past three decades have challenged mainstream cinema's reliance on motion and action. More than other realist art cinema, slow movies by Lisandro Alonso, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Pedro Costa, Jia Zhang-ke, Abbas Kiarostami, Cristian Mungiu, Alexander Sokurov, Bela Tarr, Gus Van Sant and others radically adhere to space-times in which emotion is repressed along with motion; editing and dialogue yield to stasis and contemplation; action surrenders to emptiness if not death.

"Uzak - Weit" : Ein Türkischer Film in Europa (A Turkish Film in Europe) |
(In 2002, the Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan at their innerländischen demographics change, internal migration, apart, creating a cinematic masterpiece that is excellent in Europe with numerous film awards. But what exactly makes this unassuming film so special and why it is celebrated as a European cinema, where he still worked up a seemingly specifically Turkish problem? This work sets the film in a socio-political and film-historical context, where the emphasis is on the analysis and interpretation of the stylized features.)

International Westerns : Re-Locating the Frontier |
The Western tradition, with its well-worn tropes, readily identifiable characters, iconic landscapes, and evocative soundtracks, is not limited to the United States. Western, or Western-inspired films have played a part in the output of numerous national film traditions, including Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and Latin America.
In International Westerns: Re-Locating the Frontier, Cynthia J. Miller and A. Bowdoin Van Riper have assembled a collection of essays that explore the significance and meanings of these films, their roots in other media, and their reception in the national industries which gave them form. Among the questions that the volume seeks to answer are: What do Westerns not made in the U.S. reveal? In what ways do they challenge or support the idea of national literatures and cinemas? How do these films negotiate nation, narrative, and genre?

Cinema as Weather : Stylistic Screens and Atmospheric Change |
How do cinematic portrayals of the weather reflect and affect our experience of the world? While weatherly predictability and surprise can impact our daily experience, the history of cinema attests to the stylistic and narrative significance of snow, rain, wind, sunshine, clouds, and skies. Through analysis of films, Kristi McKim calls our attention to the ways that we read our atmospheres both within and beyond the movies.
Building upon meteorological definitions of weather's dynamism and volatility, this book shows how film weather can reveal character interiority, accelerate plot development, inspire stylistic innovation, comprise a momentary attraction, convey the passage of time, and idealize the world at its greatest meaning-making capacity.
Using film theory, history, formalist/phenomenological analysis, and eco-criticism, this book casts cinema as weather, insofar as our skies and screens become readable through our interpretation of changing phenomena.

Film After Film (Or, What Became of 21st Century Cinema?) |
J. Hoberman turns an erudite eye to the study of twenty-first-century cinema and finds that, only a dozen years into the new millennium, the world of movies has already experienced a revolutionary transformation.
This sea change in filmmaking spanned the 2000 American presidential election and the trauma of 9/11, events that reshaped world politics and left an indelible imprint on the emerging aesthetic of the new century's cinema. A rupture opened up in the evolution of film, presaging, as Susan Sontag forlornly predicted a few years earlier, the death of cinephilia, or at least cinephilia as we know it.
Witty and allusive, in the style of classic film theorist/critics such as André Bazin and Siegfried Kracauer, Film After Film expands on a much-discussed era-defining Artforum article by Hoberman before moving on to a chronicle of the Bush years in cinema.

New Turkish Cinema : Belonging, Identity and Memory |
Providing a sharp and engaging analysis of the films by internationally acclaimed new wave Turkish directors...
Asuman Suner explores the emergence of the new wave Turkish cinema against the backdrop of the drastic transformation of Turkey since the 1990s. Suner argues that this new cinema, including both commercial and independent productions, persistently returns to the themes of belonging, identity and memory; it is how films address these themes that constitutes a dividing line, with big budget popular films tending to settle contradictions into comforting resolutions, while independent movies demonstrate their paradoxical nature. At the same time, she addresses the divergences between popular and "art" cinema that destabilize the very distinction between these categories.(From the back cover)

Exile Cinema : Filmmakers at Work Beyond Hollywood |
Exile Cinema : Filmmakers at Work Beyond Hollywood
Outside the shrinking American film-culture market there is a vast movie-crazed world where madmen, geniuses, and apostates roam freely, subject to a relatively minimal degree of corporate industry and spin control. In Exile Cinema, prominent film critics profile the oeuvres of working, thriving international filmmakers. These filmmakers battle the greatest odds a modern artist can face: the opposition of mass culture at large and a medium that requires enormous expenditures in every stage of production and distribution. Naturally, the average American moviehead rarely gets a chance to see these marginalized directors' work and often knows about them only through dazzled rumors and rhapsodic hearsay. Whimsical and deeply subjective, the viewpoints and evangelisms in Exile Cinema will serve as salve for the cineaste's lonesome fury.

(Arka kapak)
